Reed James smith is a professional fine artistAs a surreal expressionist oil painter, I find my biggest inspirations come from my subconscious. Pulling new creations out of my unconscious mind allows my work to be recognizable on the surface, while transcending reality with unfamiliar concepts and unusual colour and object placement. My work is a true expression of what lies beneath the surface of conscious thought. Reed was born in 1992 in Phoenix, Arizona, but has lived and worked in Los Angeles, California since 2016. He studied fine arts, with an oil painting focus, at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Scottsdale College and Scottsdale Artists' School in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Ventura College in Ventura, California. He also studied under the painter Paton Miller in Southampton, New York, where his love of oil painting only grew stronger. Reed has formed close bonds with both Paton Miller and the renowned sculptor, Nathan Slate Joseph. He admires both artists, viewing them as mentors in both art and life. Reed's list of influential artists is long, but the influences of Edward Hopper, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Egon Schiele are the most prevalent in his work.
